Taking a Pet on the NYC Subway: A Calm First Ride
How to prepare a dog or cat for the NYC subway or bus: an appropriate carrier, quiet timing, station access, short practice, and rider courtesy.
MTA rules require pets on subways and buses to be in a bag or other container and carried without annoying other riders. Test your setup at home before attempting a station.
The carrier must be secure, ventilated, and manageable on stairs. Add an absorbent liner and current identification, but do not open it on the platform or train. Pick an accessible station and travel outside rush hour.
For the first trip, ride only a stop or two. Position the carrier away from doors and never put it on a seat. If your pet pants heavily, claws at the exit, or cannot settle, leave at the next safe stop and make the following session easier.
