NYC Winter Dog Walks: Salt, Slush, and Paw Care
Protect dog paws from New York sidewalk salt, ice, and slush with route choices, gradual boot training, rinsing, drying, and injury checks.
If your dog suddenly lifts a foot, check between the toes and around each pad. Salt crystals, compacted ice, and small cracks can all cause pain.
Introduce boots indoors in short sessions before relying on them outside. Choose less heavily salted routes where possible and keep walks appropriate for your dog’s coat, age, and health.
After every walk, rinse paws with lukewarm water, dry between toes, and inspect for redness. Do not let the dog lick sidewalk residue. Bleeding, swelling, a deep crack, or persistent limping needs a veterinary exam.
Keep a towel and rinse container by the door. A groomer can safely manage long fur between pads when home trimming is difficult.
